Randall Hicks Newsletter #2 THE BABY GAME)
Greetings! Man, I'm really bad at this self-publicity stuff. Writing mysteries is easy compared to writing about myself, so I'll just jabber on like an idiot. Nothing new there, right? I've been busy putting the finishing touches on a non-fiction how-to adoption book for Penguin/Putnam. It's pretty boring and I find myself itching to get back to writing mysteries. I sneak away and write a few Toby Dillon pages when I can't control myself. I'm doing something odd: I'm writing the 3rd and 4th books in the series at the same time. I couldn't decide between two ideas I really liked and thought, what the heck, I'll just jot down a few ideas. Before I knew it, I was in full speed on them both, back and forth. We will see how it goes. I hope to have some news on when the second book in the series, BABY CRIMES, will be out, but not quite yet. Thanks for your patience and I'm sorry for the delay. It has been an amazing year for THE BABY GAME. First it won the Gumshoe Award for Best Debut Novel. Then it was named as a finalist for the Anthony, Barry and Macavity Awards, also in the Best First Novel category. All three will be given out at Bouchercon, so needless to say I'm quite honored and excited. I'd like to salute my fellow nominees. Here they are: THE ANTHONY AWARD (Best Debut Novel) THE BABY GAME, Randall Hicks DIE A LITTLE, Megan Abbott IMMORAL, Brian Freeman OFFICER DOWN, Theresa Schwegel TILT-A-WHIRL, Chris Grabenstein The winner is determined by the attendees of Bouchercon, the world's biggest mystery convention, held this year in Madison, WI, starting September 28th. THE MACAVITY AWARD (Best Debut Novel) IMMORAL, Brian Freeman ALL SHOOK UP, Mike Harrison THE BABY GAME, Randall Hicks The winner is determined by subscribers to Mystery Readers International. The voting deadline has passed I think. THE BARRY AWARD The winner of the Barry is determined by "readers or subscribers" to Deadly Pleasures Magazine. The voting deadline is January 10th and votes can be cast by e-mail to George@DeadlyPleasures.com. In addition to the five choices for Best Debut (I consider the other four all more talented than me, to be honest), there are several other categories, and you might wish to take part in voting and determing the Barry winners. In the event you've been a Deadly Pleasures reader and wish to vote in any of the categories, here they are: BEST NOVEL: BLOODLINES, Jan Burke RED LEAVES, Thomas H. THE GUMSHOE AWARD (Best First Novel) THE BABY GAME, Randall Hicks (winner) THE COLOR OF LAW, Mark Gimenez TILT-A-WHIRL, Chris Grabenstein SACRED COWS, Karen E. Olson BENEATH A PANAMANIAN MOON, David Terrenoire The Gumshoe is awarded by Mystery Ink, found at MysteyInkOnline.com, and offers lots of intesting information. See what I mean! Quite a year! If you will be at Bouchercon, I hope you will say hello, and e-mail me if you want a hand-delivered avocado while there, grown organically in Toby Dillon's orchard, right from the Toby Tree, in fact. (Although for some reason the fruit sticker on it says "Hicks Family Orchard.") Be well everybody, and thanks so much for signing up for my newsletter list! Randy randy@randall-hicks.com
